Jaume Xifra, Salt, Girona-Spain, 1934 - Paris-France, 2014.
During the sixties with a singular pictorial work and with the technique of "pochoir" (template), Jaume Xifra focused on the critical expression of consumer society, guaranteeing us - through his work - a hope for change. Xifra through its critical vision and through a technical and later technological art presents us the very existence of the human being as a series of successive moments. This world-renowned artist from his workshop in Paris, turned in his templates of cut cardboard, creating atmospheres of color and light, often with a touch of intrigue and mystery. In these paintings with acrylics and sprays, the so-called pochoirs -which point us to the attitude and technique of graffiti's writters- clearly distinguish some parts of the human body that indicate that man was his greatest "object-model". Subsequently, after his pochoirs, his installations "irreplaceables and irreversibles" and his actions close to the happening with the group of artists called "The Catalans of Paris", Xifra went into the world of new technologies as a medium and support of his latest works. Thus, from computer graphic to computer art, from 1985 and in constant evolution, Jaume Xifra made possible -through his software created by himself, the sprays on canvas and then the digital printing with which he "painted" through the computer- make "psychomorphic" portraits of people or things, determining their traits as a result of characteristics of their nature, intuition, faculties and cultural experience.
This artist balanced the game, the sense of humor and the poetry. The artistic legacy of Xifra is the game of the psychological life of the individual that creates the possibility of reflection becoming effective the critical relation with the technique. Xifra showed us the magic of a critical inventor of fetish illusions that portray our own world. Although already deceased, the work of Xifra continues inspiring other artists to deepen in a participatory art and mirror of the society. To have Xifra's work is to have a spell of freshness and a forceful and unrepeatable work that we currently see in the best collections of contemporary art. With the work of Xifra, we still make clear the mcluhanian axiom that "the medium is the message" and as the artist expressed "the object is not the real, but it is the meaning and the emotion”.
