JOAN RABASCALL

JOAN RABASCALL

Born in Barcelona-Spain, 1935. He studied in Barcelona and moved to Paris in 1962. In 1965 and 1969 he participated in the Paris Biennial and in 1972 and 1976 in Venice. From the phrase of Leonardo Da Vinci: "Art is something mental", for Joan Rabascall, conceptual art is born. After arriving in Paris in 1962 (in full "glorious thirties"), as well as a stay in London in 1964 (where he met the artist Antoni Miralda) and after meeting the theorists Pierre Restany (intellectual father of the new French realism) and Lawrence Alloway (who coined the term Pop art in 1958 and collaborates with the Independent Group), Rabascall makes contact with the avant-gardes and is heavily influenced by them. His graphical and textual accumulations refer us to the work of artists such as those of the aforementioned Independet Group of England; as well as to the air of the era of the expressive economy of the images and their capacity of mechanical reproduction. Celebrities, icons, myths and advertising, will be protagonists in an art that starts with Pop and the desire to subvert it. Joan Rabascall acts as an intruder in the mass-media. With his appropriations of the publicity originates a counterculture, a revolt of symbols that generates a dialectic word-image and the deconstruction of the spectacle of the consumer society. Rabascall's political-social involvement produces provocative ideas and denunciations about manipulation, alienation, omnipresence of communication, instrumentalization of language, consumerism, violence, war and machismo. The artwork of Rabascall is present in the most renowned collections of contemporary art. This great artist has made many large format exhibitions in the most serious institutions of the international cultural circuit. In 2009, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona dedicated a macro retrospective exhibition: "Rabascall. Producció 1964-1982 ". As a journalist with a critical and poetic eye, Joan Rabascall from his studio in the city of Paris, with its assemblies, collages and photomontages, makes us voyeurs of the course of history. His work is the mirror of the time, of memory and of the collective psyche.
